Savannah picks InfoWorks for city-wide model

17 December 2007: The City of Savannah’s h20 and Sewer Bureau has chosen InfoWorks from Wallingford Software to meet its modeling needs.

Both the sanitary sewer and water supply versions of InfoWorks are being used. “We selected InfoWorks from Wallingford Software based on an evaluation of the water and sewer modeling software available in the market. This was the best one to fit our needs,” said h20 & Sewer Engineering Director Abe Ghazi. A particular requirement was to choose a dynamic system, he added. “We are going to be using InfoWorks to model both the water and sewer systems for the City of Savannah.”

The software has been installed and preliminary sets of data have been imported. “We are adding to it and completing the model,” said Mr Ghazi. Parts of the system are already running, though the software has not yet been fully implemented. “We haven’t had any problems with it - it is running well.”

Savannah is located in Georgia in the southern USA. Its h20 & Sewer Bureau is a municipal, government-based, organization serving residents, businesses, and visitors. The Bureau’s work is vital to meeting the needs of a growing community and overcoming the challenges of ageing infrastructure.

The Bureau is made up of an environmental affairs section, as well as four departments, including h20 & Sewer Planning & Engineering (WSPE), which is headed by Mr Ghazi. The department will be using InfoWorks to help in a variety of roles, including managing capital improvement projects, maintaining an inventory of water and wastewater systems and keeping as-built plans up to date. Technical support is provided to the other departments within the Bureau. The WSPE is also the local enforcement agency for the review and approval of all water and sewer construction plans and specifications to ensure full compliance with federal, state and local rules, regulations and ordinances.

Watson-Marlow Bredel

Monday, December 31st, 2007

Watson-Marlow Bredel has, through selective acquisition, innovative product development and geographical expansion, grown rapidly to lead the world market for peristaltic pumps, tube and hose pumps. This is an expanding segment of the positive displacement pump market, and the peristaltic principle enables sensitive, abrasive or corrosive fluids to be pumped safely, accurately and without contamination anywhere from biotechnology to chemical and food processing to waste treatment.

PRIMARY / THICKENED SLUDGE FEEDING

The simple glandless, “straight through” construction without valves, seals, vanes, rotors or impellers, has clear advantages in handling viscous sludges liable to contain grit, rag type or other solids which cause blockages, while the ability to impart minimal shear, combined with the high levels of volumetric accuracy when handling additives such as polyelectrolyte, is important in terms of both efficient flocculation and additive consumption.

Reduced operating costs can be achieved by the installation of Watson-Marlow Bredel pumps in the feeding of primary or thickened sludge to digesters or filter presses, and in primary tank auto-desludging. To complete primary auto-desludging, following digester treatment, the sludge goes to secondary storage tanks, where polyelectrolytes are dosed by low-pressure peristaltic pumps prior to dewatering.

PERISTALTIC PUMPS

Peristaltic pumps have no valves, seals or glands, and the fluid contacts only the bore of the hose or tube. Simple to install, easy to use and quick to maintain, provide a low whole live cost, they are the hot new technology, and the world’s fastest-growing pump type.

Supply of quality potable water within current permit levels is paramount, and efficient plant operation is essential in meeting these critical standards. Metering applications, typically with sodium hypochlorite, lime or ferric chloride, often place arduous demands on pumps. These chemicals can cause vapour locking, abrasive wear and pump clogging, leading to poor performance and premature failure of traditional metering pumps. Watson-Marlow Bredel peristaltic pumps are a proven solution and exceed performance expectations.

HIGH-PRESSURE HOSE PUMPS

High-pressure hose pumps offer increased reliability and cost reductions for sludge applications. Critical processes such as centrifuge feed must be carried out reliably. Watson-Marlow Bredel hose pumps are able to meet these demanding performance requirements.

Abrasion - grit resistant hose
100% efficient - no slip

Lowest Life Cycle Cost (LCC)
Only one wearing part - the hose
Reversible
Dry-running
Self priming to 30ft suction

Hose pumps offer efficient handling of primary, secondary, digested thickened sludge, RAS, WAS and scum, and are used in DAF, septage, sampling, grit removal, belt filter presses and centrifuge feeds.

WEDECO

Monday, December 31st, 2007

ITT WEDECO is a world market leader in the non-chemical treatment of water, offering environmentally friendly, residue-free technologies such as ultraviolet disinfection and ozone oxidation. Maximum customer benefit is provided by a comprehensive combination of standardized systems and engineered solutions for treatment of potable water, industrial process water, cooling water, industrial and municipal wastewater, as well bleaching processes and other industrial applications (e.g.
ozonolysis).

WEDECO has installed more than 200,000 UV and ozone systems worldwide and has over 25 years of experience in technical expertise in the field of ultraviolet and ozone technology. Committed, highly qualified experts in the research and development, production, sales, commercial and technical operations and customer service departments all contribute to the company’s success.

UV DISINFECTION WATER TREATMENT SYSTEMS

The light necessary for UV disinfection is generated in special UV lamps. A watertight quartz tube surrounds each lamp. The liquid to be disinfected is passed through the quartz tubing. The gas plasma generated in the lamp emits light with a primary wave length of 253.7nm. This intensive UV light reaches the microorganisms in the water and impacts directly on their DNA. By changing the DNA the cell division of the microorganism is interrupted - it can no longer reproduce itself and thus loses its pathogenic effect. With WEDECO technology it is possible to destroy more than 99.99% of all pathogens in water without the addition of chemicals and without harmful side effects. Our UV water treatment systems are inexpensive, highly efficient and absolutely reliably.

Our product ranges and their fields of application are as follows:

Aquada - drinking water, domestic water

A - drinking water, process water, warm water

B/BX - drinking water, process water warm water

LBA / LBT - wastewater, sugar syrup, media with low UV transmission

TAK - wastewater, open chanel

K - drinking water

E/ME - process water, pharmaceutical design, drinking water, wastewater

OZONE OXIDATION GENERATORS

Ozone is generated by means of a silent electrical discharge in an oxygen containing gas. To maximize yields while minimizing operating costs, WEDECO developed the unique, compact Effizon® HP line of ozone generators.

The environment inside an ozone generator is unforgiving, both chemically and electrically. High electrical voltages combined with oxidant gases require an ozone generator made from suitable materials with high breakdown safety factors to ensure long-term, reliable performance for our customers. WEDECO’s patented Effizon® HP electrode / dielectric assembly accomplishes this like no other system. Effizon® HP dielectrics have a 10:1 electrical breakdown factor of safety compared with conventional ozone systems. Effizon® HP generators have eliminated the problem of dielectric failures, as well as associated downtime and maintenance costs.

WEDECO’s current product range sets the standard for ozone systems:

Modular 1g/h to 8g/h - recycling water, process water

GSA/GSO 15g/h to 400g/h - process water and drinking water

SMA/SMO 400g/h to 1,500g/h - drinking water, process water, cooling water wastewater, industrial processes

PDA/PDO 1,500g/h to 500,000g/h - pulp and paper bleaching, wastewater, drinking water, industrial processes

UV AND OZONE SYSTEMS RESEARCH

Interdisciplinary research groups made up of electrical engineers, process engineers, microbiologists, doctors and physicists, both internal and external, work to continuously develop and optimise WEDECO’s UV and ozone systems.

Apart from our work within the company, we also team up with international institutes to work on current research projects. We concentrate on water reuse, focussing especially on eliminating pathogens such as cryptosporidia and amoeba.
